How Alert Fatigue Develops

Alert fatigue develops through a predictable progression. Initially, teams configure alerts conservatively—thresholds set to catch the slightest anomaly, broad alert rules that fire on any unusual pattern. Over time, operational experience reveals that most of these alerts are benign: routine auto-scaling events, transient latency spikes, expected maintenance windows. But instead of tuning the alerts, teams start ignoring them—the psychological response to chronic noise. By the time a genuine critical incident occurs, the alert that signals it has the same apparent urgency as hundreds of previous false positives. In multi-cloud environments, this problem is multiplied: each cloud provider has its own alerting system, its own alert formats, its own severity semantics, generating a cross-platform noise that no single pane of glass adequately addresses.

Alerts that fail these tests should be converted to metrics for dashboards (if useful for context), automated (if the response can be automated), or eliminated (if they provide no value).
